“How do you feel?” Her uniform sparkles loudly, so crisp and sharp.

“Ok.” Now go away.

” No pain?” The nurse tucked the blanket in, straightened while she talked, giving the patient the illusion of normalcy.

“No, no pain.” What a vicious fucking lie. The pill had numbed her, its true. Her bruised jaw, her eye swollen shut and the light marks around her neck, those did not hurt. But something else hurt.

” Can I get you anything, love?” The eyes of the patient swung angrily to the pitying nurse.

“I’m CLEARLY no one’s LOVE. Thank you.” Pinching her lips together to hold back a sob, the lips of the injured woman turned lily-white. The nurse swore the whiteness started to spread right then and there.
